The vision of the Seaton Valley Learning Partnerships is to bring the local communities, parents, carers, voluntary and community groups together with other agencies and organisations in order that they work closer together to support and enhance the life chances for children and young people enabling them to reach their full potential. The role of Extended Services is to investigate and understand what is required, plan ahead, build on existing activities and develop new exciting opportunities that are needed.

So, the first question was; what do you want, what do you really, really want?

You may have heard about the consultations we did where we met with all the children and young people within the schools to find out what activities they really want to do out of school hours, where they want to do them and who they want to run them.

Already through Extended Services we have been increasing the opportunities to access sports activities. We have provided sessions for children in the First Schools where they participate alongside their parents and carers as this is what they told us they wanted most! The majority of Middle School children told us that they did not want to go to First Schools to do activities, so we have arranged that they do their exercise with their friends at their own school and we are also letting them know what other activities are available nearby their homes.

Peer Tutors are here to help...

So what is a Peer Tutor?

We have groups of students, from Seaton Sluice First, Seaton Sluice Middle and from Astley Community High, who have trained as fellows of University of First Age.

They had fun together during two days out of school learning how the brain works and how everyone has different learning styles. With this knowledge they can help support the younger students to settle in when they start at their new school.

These students are active volunteers at the Family Fun Days we have organised and are also going into the First Schools to help with activities and breaking down barriers to learning.

Time for families to have fun together...

Many families have joined in and enjoyed a variety of activities from arts and crafts, to finding out more about healthy diets, cooking, kickboxing, playing games and building K’nex models with the children. We have also been able to provide other useful information for example job opportunities to fire safety.

Parenting – it’s a tough job!

Who do you call when you need a listening ear for any concerns with your young ones, need information or direction for support? Being a Parent is the hardest job in the world and doesn’t come with an instruction manual! This is where Liliana Ghilardi, our Parent Support Partner, can help. Liliana is available to support the whole family, parents, carers and students alike, providing them with information to link them with the opportunities that meet their needs.

THIS IS EXTENDED SERVICES!

It’s all part of the Schools being the heart of the community and not just a place for education, extending the role of the school and providing more opportunities. Many more fun days and family learning together activities are planned for all members of the family within Seaton Valley through Extended Services so come along and meet us.
